Episode 92--The MacDougalls and...other stuff....

This episode starts off with an interview with Larry and Patricia Ann Lewis MacDougall.
Many thanks to this kind pair of extremely talented artists for joining us.

Thanks for the episode folks, hidden in there I think I got some decent answers to my questions ;)

there's proof Socar used to play NetH@ck, she was playing during some of the early podcasts :)

Drew mentioned Mark Kistler, who was my hero in grade school, I still have his autograph in some ancient sketchbook.

and to her credit, those sumo commercials are pretty awesome

I have to agree regarding a Facebook fan page, every time I consider it, I'm wondering who would ever like it and how full of myself I must be to even consider it. I find it easier to manage my professional and personal contacts with the privacy groups. That way, I can prevent my professional contacts from seeing all the offensive or dorky stuff I post:) On the other hand, there are many artists I wish had fan pages because I'm too shy to ask them to be my friend!

And for the record, I've been a gamer for a long time but I'm not a loser no matter what Socar thinks...

Kieran mentioned Borderlands! I'm not much of a gamer, but Borderlands got me hooked badly for a while, because of the art style and the setting.

Fun episode again, very much enjoyed it :)

For the record, I don't REALLY think gamers are losers. I'm just jealous, as I haven't had time to turn on my PS3 or X360 since last summer.

Nice episode guys! Patrick- some recent studies suggest that drinks using artificial sweetener taste sweet but do not fool the brain into believing you've consumed energy. Therefore people will then consume more carbohydrates or sugars during the day than if they'd just had the regular drink in the first place....hmmm also I think Coke Zero tastes like petrol.

All hands are diamonds- seriously just draw a diamond shape on the end of an arm and you're half way there :)

In Ozland where i live Borders/Angus & Robertson book franchises have gone into receivership... the beginning of the end for the printed word? Are e books popular enough to support our industry? Is this happening in England-land, Euroville or the United States of Americaland?

I'm just being a smart ass Socar. On the other hand, tabletop games (roleplaying, ccg's or boardgames) are a great excuse to see friends and a great way to meet new geeks.

The Art Renewal Podcast doesn't seem to have been updated in a while. Both of Juliette Aristides' books ('Classical Drawing Atelier' and 'Classical Painting Atelier' are published, and are very worth getting, not least for the pictures. There are some amazing contemporary realist painters about, whose work measures up well to the Old Masters. Many of the issues and techniques discussed are quite relevant to fantasy illustration.

Alonso -- I learned a ton from Commander Mark (as he was called on Secret City), and from Ed Emberley's drawing books. And from trying to get as good at drawing as my older brother. A five year head start made him quite hard to catch.

How does one know if they are a douche bag blogger?

Now I am all worried and stuff...

Chris--
Here's a brief litmus test:

Ask yourself--
Do you tend to post a lot of monster designs...? ;)

I kid because I love.

Interesting show this week. I think the talk about blogging was
really good. Blogging can be a very good way of hopefully getting someone to see your work for the first time and then keeping them engaged actively in the progression of your work/career. I follow all the hosts blogs because as a listener and artist it really helps me to put your comments and opinions in context when I am familiar with your work. I have to really agree with the high level of doucehbaggery often found in the online art community and especially in the so called "profesional artist" forums. The flipside of that is that there are places like ArtOrder which seems to be very ego free and full of pros willing to chat and give a little wisdom to less experienced folks like me.... I will hopefully repay the community by trying to keep as douchebag free as much as I can. ;)

Cheers,

Shaun
